Teaching Methods

At Minnewasta School, many teachers use a centre-based approach to instruction which provides a rich variety of learning experiences that students get to try independently, while allowing teachers to focus on small group instruction. This helps us to better address individual student needs and to help them develop as learners from where they are currently.

As an Early Years school we believe in the importance of play and exploration.  More and more classrooms have incorporated play and exploration based activities into their daily schedules.  These times allow students to interact with objects, ideas and others in imaginitive and creative ways, to discover and extend their interests and to demonstrate thier learning in personally relevant formats, to design and implement thier own plans, to think divergently and to develop a strong sense of ownership of their learning.

To further make learning relevent to students, we are increasingly seeing the use of Project Based Learning (PBL) experiences that focus more on the processes of inquiry, research, design and problem solving than on the final product.  Our PBL experiences have helped to connect students to their community and to the world with projects like the Little Free Library, Community Explorations, and Global Read-Alouds.

Learning Evironments

We have taken steps to design inviting classroom environments with flexible seating and multi-modal areas.  All of our classrooms have carpet or "morning meeting" areas, sitting and standing desks, a vairety of chairs and stools that allow for optimal movement and flexible arrangements that allow individual and collaborative work.
