On Thursday, March 19th, our school will join people around the globe in recognizing World Down Syndrome Day through our own Lots of Socks Day! Although the official date is March 21st, we will celebrate two days early so our whole school community can participate.

About World Down Syndrome Day

World Down Syndrome Day is observed each year on 3/21 to symbolize the triplication of the 21st chromosome, which causes Down syndrome. It's an opportunity to promote awareness, understanding, and inclusion for individuals with Down Syndrome, and to celebrate the many strengths and contributions they bring to our communities. Did you know that we have students in our school who have Down Syndrome?

Why “Lots of Socks"?

Bright, colorful, and mismatched socks have become the international symbol of the day. Chromosomes look a bit like socks, and the playful sock theme helps spark curiosity and conversation while spreading a message of acceptance and belonging.

This Year's Theme:  Together Against Loneliness

For many in the Down Syndrome community, the world can be a lonely place. People with Down syndrome and intellectual disabilities are nearly three times more likely to feel lonely than those without disabilities. Loneliness isn't just a feeling; it affects health, happiness, and the fundamental right to belong. 

Your socks can be the start of a conversation that breaks the silence. The Lots Of Socks campaign was created to get the world talking!

How We'll Celebrate

On Thursday, March 19^th, we encourage all staff and students to:

• Wear bright, colorful, or mismatched socks! When you wear your boldest, brightest, or most mismatched socks, you are making a visible promise to include others. When someone asks about your socks, you can tell them that you are standing up for a world where no one has to walk their path alone. 
• Participate in awareness activities that highlight inclusion and celebrate differences.

Snow Hills and Snow Forts

•             Leave other people's forts alone

o             Do not touch or steal blocks from other forts

•             Avoid making teams, sides, or marking territory/boundaries

•             Avoid pushing, shoving, or king of the hill style games

•             Report issues to a supervisor outside as soon as they happen

Here are the upcoming events involving our choir students over the next few weeks:

🎷 Friday, March 13 – All Day

Jazz Choir at the Brandon Jazz Festival

•             Students will be away for the full day attending and performing at the festival.

🎤 Monday, March 23 – Afternoon

Grade 5–8 Noon Choir – CBC Music Competition Video

•             Our Grade 5–8 Noon Choir students will be walking to the United Church to film a submission for a CBC Music competition.

•             They will return to school before the end of the day.

Ramadan club will be meeting again in Mr. Tanguay's room from noon till 12:25pm.

MYRCA is still happening on Fridays at 12:30pm in the Library. Come and catch up on some great reading with us! 😊

When going out for recess, go straight through the courtyard/outdoor classroom area and out to the playground. When doing so, stay off the ramps and stairs of the huts. These huts belong to Modern Collegiate, and their classes are in session. Using the ramps or stairs causes disruption. Please help us be good neighbours and respect their space!

Grade 8 boys basketball team windup on Friday March 13 during the noon hour. Pizza will be provided and scrimmage to follow. Jerseys must be washed and handed back in by the 13th!

7/8 Badminton Skills Club will run Tuesday/Thursday 4-6pm

All students in grade 7 or 8 interested in playing should come to the gym at 4pm on Tuesday, March 10 to get more information and/or sign up, games will follow (ending at 6pm).

Students in attendance MUST arrange to be picked up at 6pm sharp.
